The french simca company evolved into a lonely, captive outpost of the american chrysler corporation following a dizzying series of takeovers and mergers. But before that happened, simca earned an affectionate niche in the annals of classic cars.

founded in 1934 by henri-theodore pigozzi to manufacture fiats for the french market, simca started out virtually copying the italian counterparts of its day. Its biggest hit, the cinq, remained popular through the forties. In 1958, however, chrysler bought a 15-percent share of simca, and the company began to lose its manufacturing identity.

around the time of the chrysler coup, simca came out with its plein ciel or p 60 coupes. The p was for personalized ; The 60 was meant to imply that the manufacturer was years ahead of its time. The model had twelve basic styles, from two-door to four-door; One model was a small van with a tarpaulin-covered platform. Even with all the variations, the plein ciel didnt seek innovation. It was, instead, the consolidation of
everything that had worked well in simcas storied history.
This simca plein ciel was introduced in 1958. Made byfacel, its design nevertheless was reminiscent of the ford thunderbird.
