Classified as a compact by the standards of the time, the 195-in.-long mercury comet made its debut as a i960 series. The caliente, consisting of a sedan, hardtop coupe and convertible, became the top-line comet for 1964. When equipped with one of several high-performing v8 engines, the caliente won a reputation as a muscle car.

V8 engine, the mercury comet cyclone gt was generally left in the dust by muscle-car rivals like the pontiac gto, dodge coronet, plymouth belvedere and chevrolet chevelle ss-396. As a result, it sold poorly despite its appearance, in candy-apple-red convertible form, as the official pace car of the 1966 indianapolis 500.

In 1955 the ford motor company, following the example of general motors, split lincoln-mercury in an effort to respond better to consumer demand in the medium-priced automobile market. Under jack reith, the head of the new mercury division, the marque proceeded to grab a larger chunk of the domestic market with its monterey, montclair and custom series. That year, the custom series consisted of a two-door hardtop coupe, two- and four-door sedans and a station wagon.
