Breaking precedent with mercedes-benz practice, the 180 was a monocoque with a platform that joined the side members of the chassis to the floor of the body. A subframe carried the drivetrain, steering and front-wheel assembly. This layout increased rigidity, lessened noise and, because the subframe was detachable, made servicing and repairs easier.
